How do you write the percussion of a pop song?

Like does the drum switch notes (if so, when?)or does it stay on the same note? How do you write the percussion of a pop song? And how do yo decide what drums yo want to use (I have a keyboard with just about everything on it). What kinds of drums do pop bands usually use, specifically Maroon 5?
