Suggestions for where to buy furniture?

Hi all, I need to pick up some furniture for grad school in August. I already have bedroom furniture, but my roommate in college already had kitchen and living room furniture there when I moved in. I'd like a couch/futon (I say futon because I'm on a budget and they tend to be cheaper than just a regular couch, and as long as it's clean and relatively comfy I'm not high maintenance), a coffee table, maybe a new TV stand, and a small kitchen table with 2-4 chairs (my apartment doesn't really have a place to put a regular-sized kitchen or dining room table). A lot of Ikea's stuff is a bit too modern for my tastes. I've checked out Pier 1 and like some of their tables, so I'm wondering if anybody else has some suggestions along those lines--something that's going to give a more classic look (keeping in mind that my wallet is that of a grad student, not a Wall Street banker ;)). I've heard flea markets, etc are good places to look, but truth be told I hate shopping, so I'd kind of prefer a chain store that will be easier to shop. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
