Can you explain why debit became expense and revenue became credit?

I'm helping my friend with his accounting and he is asking for the answer of why debit became expense and revenue became credit. I think I might have an answer for that but maybe some of you out there are accountants, bankers, or really smart students. Please help if you have the answer. Thank you.
