I broke my nut??? plumbing question?

We tried to unscrew the slip nut attached to the P trap underneath our sink to unclog it, and while we tried to unscrew the big plastic slip nut it broke. So we bought a new one but have no idea how to get the new one on. If you could direct me to a site or tell in detail how to do this please do. Thank you!
